BEHIND THE IRAN HEADLINES Series, May 7, 2024, Alireza Jafarzadeh, NCRI-US Deputy Director
Executions are on the rise, local protests over economic and social issues continue across Iran, and political disarray is spreading throughout the regime, even among circles closest to its supreme leader. Iran’s society is a powder keg.
Meanwhile, the Resistance Units affiliated with the MEK are expanding and organizing, and NCRI President-elect Maryam Rajavi’s Ten-point Plan for the future of Iran as a democratic and peaceful republic is garnering growing international recognition across five continents, including in the U.S. Congress.
In response, the clerical regime, which has considered the NCRI and the MEK as its existential nemesis since the 1980s, is dialing up its relentless campaign against the Iranian Resistance.
These actions range from domestic propaganda campaigns and spreading unfounded rumors to the mass arrest of thousands of their supporters within the country, as well as international tactics such as assassination plots, conspiracies, and diplomatic demonization.
On April 27, state media reported that Mohammad Dehghan, the legal deputy to the regime’s president Ebrahim Raisi, requested that Albania extradite members of the MEK, referencing a sham trial run by the regime’s Judiciary targeting 104 members of the MEK and the NCRI.
Dehghan added, “We are anticipating the verdict’s issuance to enable its enforcement beyond our borders.”
It’s clear that these public statements are just the tip of the iceberg. Behind the international scenes, the clerical regime is doing its utmost to neutralize the Iranian Resistance to prolong its survival.
Tehran, which has repeatedly emphasized the MEK’s leading role in nationwide uprisings, also views the MEK’s revelations about its nuclear and missile programs, terrorism, and regional ambitions as the reason for its increasing international isolation.
The Iranian Resistance’s anti-suppression campaigns inside Iran and its diplomatic activities abroad will soar until the regime is toppled and a democratic, secular republic is established.
