Tehran’s Increasing Demonization of MEK Reveals Its Fear of Looming Overthrow

BEHIND THE IRAN HEADLINES Series, April 3, 2024, Alireza Jafarzadeh, NCRI-US Deputy Director

For decades, Iran’s regime has relentlessly cracked down on the organized democratic opposition movement, the MEK, which advocates for a secular republic. Despite labeling them insignificant, the regime’s extensive efforts to dismantle the MEK tell a different story.

Over the past forty years, the regime has committed numerous terrorist activities targeting the Iranian Resistance both within Iran and abroad, resulting in over 120,000 individuals falling for the cause of freedom. Over 30,000 alone were executed during the 1988 massacre of political prisoners, whose main target and the majority of its victims were the MEK.

The regime’s recent staged trial in absentia of MEK members and constant demonization campaigns expose their fear of the movement’s growing appeal among change-seeking youths inside Iran.

Tehran has financed and crafted hundreds of films and sham documentaries and published over 600 books aimed at discrediting the MEK. It utilizes its network of influencers in Washington and Western capitals to vigorously smear the MEK’s image.

Officials openly admit to constantly maligning the MEK to foreign powers.

This begs the question: Why such a focus on a supposedly insignificant group? The answer lies in the MEK’s decades-long advocacy for regime change, which has evolved into a national movement in recent years.

Despite regime suppression, the MEK’s Resistance Units have staged over 3,000 acts of defiance by the MEK’s Resistance Units targeted centers of repression and IRGC bases all across Iran.

This instills fear in the regime, highlighting the MEK’s role in Iran’s struggle for freedom. No matter what the regime does, a free Iran is imminent.
