BEHIND THE IRAN HEADLINES Series, October 18, 2024, Alireza Jafarzadeh, NCRI-US Deputy Directo
Iran’s regime continues its brutal suppression of dissent, employing a multifaceted strategy of repression that extends from the digital realm to the gallows. Freedom House’s latest report ranks the regime as the world’s third worst violator of internet freedom, underscoring how Tehran has turned the internet into a tightly controlled digital prison.
In the lead-up to the 2024 sham presidential election, the regime criminalized online content criticizing state-approved candidates and manipulated discourse through disinformation campaigns. These efforts reveal a regime desperate to maintain power amid growing discontent, leveraging censorship and artificial intelligence to distort political narratives. While these operations have had limited success, they signify a troubling trend in the regime’s evolving repression tactics.
Simultaneously, the Iranian regime has escalated its campaign of terror with mass executions. In just two days—October 9 and 13 of this year—29 prisoners were hanged, part of a larger wave of 301 executions since the regime’s new president, Masoud Pezeshkian, came to office.
These executions, often carried out after unfair trials, illustrate the regime’s complete disregard for human rights and the rule of law. The regime’s increasing reliance on executions reflects its fear of uprisings and desperation to instill terror in a population demanding democratic change. Meanwhile, protests and strikes have surged across the country, driven by economic collapse and government negligence. Students, workers, and marginalized communities are rallying against rising tuition fees, broken promises of affordable housing, and dire working conditions. Strikes in Iran’s vital oil and gas sector continue to gain momentum, with workers demanding labor rights and better wages. This convergence of economic discontent, mass executions, and digital repression reveals the Iranian regime’s profound crisis of legitimacy.
Meanwhile, its regional so-called “Strategic Depth” is crumbling, accelerating the regime’s demise, already weakened by a series of nationwide uprisings since 2017 and the expansion of the MEK-affiliated Resistance Units, which are targeting the IRGC’s centers of terror and suppression. While it clings to power through fear and control, the growing resistance within Iran signals a populace no longer willing to accept such oppression.
The world must stand with the Iranian people and the organized Resistance in their struggle for justice and freedom.
