Looming Peril of a Nuclear-Armed Fundamentalist Regime in Iran

Besides engaging in hostage diplomacy and terrorism-by-proxy tactics, the clerical regime has consistently played the nuclear blackmail card over the years to pressure Western countries into continuing their policy of appeasement.

Last week, in an alarming bid to project power and cover its internal vulnerability, Tehran dispatched a senior figure to boast about its offensive nuclear potential.

Kamal Kharrazi, a former foreign minister and currently an advisor on international affairs to the regime’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, suggested that Tehran would alter its nuclear doctrine if the regime’s existence were threatened.

Speaking to Al Jazeera network, Kharrazi reiterated the regime’s capability to produce nuclear bombs. The former foreign minister, who currently heads the Strategic Council on Foreign Relations, emphasized Tehran’s readiness to adjust its nuclear doctrine.

Iranian regime authorities have repeatedly boasted about possessing nuclear weapon production capabilities, albeit presenting it as contrary to their policies. In July 2022, Kharrazi admitted that Tehran has the “technical capability” to build nuclear bombs but currently lacks the intention to do so.

Let’s make it clear. Obtaining a nuclear weapon capability is a core component of Tehran’s warmongering strategy as it faces a crisis of survival and a restive nation at home. The definitive end to this threat will only be achieved when the ruling theocracy is overthrown by the Iranian people and replaced with a democratic, peaceful, and non-nuclear republic, which is what the Iranian Resistance has been seeking.

As the threat of an Islamic fundamentalist regime armed with nuclear weapons alarmingly looms, it is time for Western capitals to:

  • Blacklist the IRGC as a terrorist organization if not already designated;
  • Activate the snapback mechanism according to UN Security Council Resolution 2231 and reinstate all sanctions against the regime;
  • Place the regime under Chapter VII of the UN Charter; and
  • Recognize the Iranian people’s struggle to overthrow the regime and the rights of the young Iranians who have been fighting against the terrorist IRGC.
