UK Parliament Calls for Safeguarding Rights of MEK Members in Albania

In a resolute display of solidarity with the Iranian people, the UK House of Commons has issued a strong condemnation of the Iranian regime’s aggression against dissidents, particularly targeting members of Iran’s organized opposition movement, the MEK, residing in Albania.

This resolution calls upon European governments, notably Albania, to challenge the regime’s criminal activities and safeguard the rights of the MEK members in Ashraf 3, in accordance with the 1951 Geneva Convention, the European Convention on Human Rights, and broader international law.

The resolution emphatically criticizes the regime’s intensified reliance on terrorism, espionage, cyber-attacks, and coercive diplomacy aimed at stifling and eradicating Iran’s democratic opposition, especially the Parliament-in-exile, the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI).

It also decries the regime’s hostile measures against the NCRI, which has been advocating for the creation of a democratic republic that ensures the separation of religion and state.

The resolution implores the British government to recognize the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization. Furthermore, it advocates for collaboration with international partners to swiftly implement further sanctions against the Iranian regime and hold it accountable for illicit conduct both domestically and abroad.

During the parliamentary discussion on this resolution, the British Member of Parliament, Mr. Bob Blackman, articulated his bafflement over the UK’s hesitation to fully outlaw the IRGC, stressing the importance of backing the Iranian populace and acknowledging the legitimacy of the Iranian opposition as critical steps towards witnessing a free and democratic Iran.

Indeed, a unified resolve across both sides of the Atlantic is essential in aligning with the Iranian people’s struggle. Western capitals must decisively abandon their four-decade-long flawed policy of appeasing the Tehran tyrants at the expense of the Iranian people and their democratic Resistance.
