Alireza Jafarzadeh discusses increasing executions in Iran

As Executions Continue to Rise, Iran’s Youth Remain Defiant

BEHIND THE IRAN HEADLINES Series, January 31, 2024, Alireza Jafarzadeh, NCRI-US Deputy Director

On January 29, Khamenei’s regime ruthlessly executed four young Kurdish prisoners in the notorious Qezelhessar Prison. They were Mohsen Mazloum, Mohammad Faramarzi, Vafa Azarbar, and Pejman Fatehi. Arrested in August 2022, they were tortured into making forced confessions and later sentenced to death. The day before, in another reprehensible act, two brothers and another prisoner in his 20s were hanged in Birjand Central Prison.

Meanwhile, Iran’s youth are intensifying their efforts against the IRGC, judiciary, and other oppressive forces such as the Basij. In light of growing calls for regime change by a restive populace, the regime’s reliance on executions and repression is increasingly proving ineffective in suppressing the nationwide spirit of the fight for freedom and justice.

This resistance is boldly demonstrated by the youth, who are directly challenging the regime’s oppressive forces and centers responsible for executions and state-sanctioned corruption.

The regime’s judiciary, responsible for a surge in executions, including those of political prisoners and protesters, has been a primary target. Following the execution of Mohammad Ghobadlou and Farhad Salimi, youths in Yazd targeted a judiciary complex, while others in Zahak, Sistan-Baluchestan province, targeted a judiciary building.

Despite the regime’s intensified suppression, including a record number of executions in late 2023 and since 2024 and the alarming increase in the execution of political prisoners, the youth remain undeterred.

The regime’s attempts to instill fear through harsh punishments, such as amputating hands and ordering to gouge out a protester’s eye, have not weakened the resolve of Iran’s youth, who continue to spearhead a nationwide fight for regime change, and the establishment of a democratic, secular republic.

It is high time for the international community to recognize their legitimate resistance against terrorism and suppression propagated by the mullahs’ regime.
