22 Years Since NCRI Exposed Secret Nuclear Sites in Iran

BEHIND THE IRAN HEADLINES Series, August 14, 2024, Alireza Jafarzadeh, NCRI-US Deputy Director

On the momentous day of August 14, 2002, the world awoke to the horrific nuclear threat posed by the Iranian regime.

On that day, the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), drawing on intelligence gathered by the MEK’s network inside Iran, revealed the regime’s massive covert nuclear activities at two sites: the Natanz uranium enrichment facility and the Arak heavy water facility. These facilities provided the regime with two parallel pathways to fissile material, the central component for making a nuclear bomb.

This revelation, a testament to the NCRI’s unwavering commitment to peace, triggered global alarms, triggering the IAEA inspections of Iranian nuclear sites and leading to six UNSC resolutions. However, the clerical regime’s deception and the international community’s fragmented responses have only deepened the crisis.

In addition to engaging in hostage diplomacy and terrorism-by-proxy tactics, the clerical regime has consistently wielded the threat of nuclear blackmail to pressure Western countries into maintaining their policy of appeasement.

Let’s be clear: obtaining nuclear weapon capability is a core component of Tehran’s warmongering strategy as it faces a crisis of survival and a determined nation seeking change.

In essence, the nuclear challenge posed by the regime reflects its governance, and the actual end to this threat will only be achieved when a democratic and non-nuclear republic emerges following the regime’s overthrow by the Iranian people.

This is because only a genuinely democratic regime, rooted in Iran’s legacy of resistance and desire for freedom and peace, would prioritize its citizens’ well-being over nuclear ambitions and ensure regional and global security.

Iranians, who have sought freedom and justice for over a century, are on the brink of a monumental shift—a revolution in the making. The nationwide uprisings since 2017, fueled by the Iranian people’s enduring spirit of resistance, signify this historic and soon-to-be-fulfilled desire for change.
