BEHIND THE IRAN HEADLINES Series, April 13, 2021
Alireza Jafarzadeh, NCRI-US Deputy Director: The decision by the European Union to designate eight commanders of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) and the Iranian regime’s suppressive forces, as well as three notorious prisons is welcome, yet long overdue.
However, the designation should be extended to the Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, who personally ordered the brutal crackdown on the November 2019 protesters killing at least 1,500.
It should also include the entire IRGC as well as the Ministry of Intelligence.
The EU decision once again highlights the prudence of including the Iranian regime’s halting of human rights violations as a central condition for any future agreement with that regime.
